1157/1156 LED Bulbs Buying Guide

What Are 1157 and 1156 LED Bulbs?

SEALIGHT 1157 LED bulbs and 1156 LED bulbs replace standard automotive bulbs in compatible exterior light positions. An 1156 bulb normally has one bottom contact and provides one lighting function, such as a turn signal, reverse light, DRL or separate brake light. An 1157 bulb normally has two bottom contacts and supports two brightness levels, such as a brake and tail light or a parking light and turn signal.

LED replacements do not use filaments, and their wattage does not need to match the original incandescent bulb. Always confirm the bulb number, contacts and lighting function before ordering.

1156 vs. 1157 LED Bulbs: What Is the Difference?

The main difference between 1156 and 1157 light bulbs is the number of functions they support. Their bottom contacts and locking designs are also different.

A standard 1157 bulb should not be installed in an 1156 socket. The contacts and vehicle wiring do not match. Do not cut the locking tabs or change the factory plug to force a bulb to fit.

1157 and 1156 LED Bulbs for Brake, Tail and Turn Signal Lights

An 1156 or 1157 bulb may serve different purposes on different vehicles. Confirm the light position before choosing a replacement.

  • 1157 brake and tail lights: A compatible 1157 brake light bulb can also work as an 1157 tail light bulb, using a lower brightness for the tail light and a higher brightness for the brake light.

  • 1157 turn signals: A compatible 1157 turn signal bulb may combine a turn signal with a parking light in a dual-function socket.

  • 1156 turn signals: An 1156 turn signal bulb is commonly used in a separate, single-function signal position.

  • 1156 reverse or brake lights: An 1156 reverse light bulb may provide white backup lighting, while an 1156 brake light bulb may be used in a separate brake light position.

White is commonly used for compatible reverse lights and 1157/1156 LED DRL bulbs. Amber is commonly used for turn signals, while red is commonly used for brake and tail lights. The products currently shown in this collection produce Cool White 6000K light. Confirm that this color matches the light position and lens.

How to Choose 1157 and 1156 LED Bulbs

Start with the original bulb number, then check the lighting function, color, socket and available installation space.

  1. Confirm the bulb number: Check whether the old bulb is marked 1156, 1157 or another related number.
  2. Check the lighting function: Determine whether the position uses one function or two brightness levels.
  3. Choose the correct color: Match the LED color to the required output and lens.

  4. Compare the contacts: Make sure the bottom contacts and locking tabs match the original bulb.
  5. Check the available space: Confirm that the LED body and heat-control parts fit inside the housing.
  6. Review electrical compatibility: Some vehicles may need added support to prevent flickering, warning messages or fast turn signal flashing.

Vehicle year, make, model, trim and light position can change the required bulb. Use the Automotive Bulb Finder to check fitment before ordering.

Why Choose SEALIGHT 1157 and 1156 LED Bulbs?

  1. Cool White 6000K: Current products provide clean white light for compatible exterior lighting positions.

FAQs

Yes. An 1157 LED bulb can replace an 1157 incandescent bulb when it matches the socket, contacts, lighting functions and available space. Confirm that the LED supports both brightness levels required by the vehicle.

The 2057, 2357 and 7528/P21/5W are common 1157 cross references or related bulb numbers. However, their power and output can differ. Only use a replacement that clearly lists the number printed on the original bulb.

No. Standard 1157 and 1156 bulbs use different bottom contacts and electrical functions. They are not direct replacements, even if their outer shapes look similar.

The 7506 and P21W are common references for standard 1156-style applications. Some products may support other related sizes, but the locking tabs and power ratings can differ. Check the exact product specifications before ordering.

The brightest 1157 LED bulb is not always the one with the highest advertised lumen number. Look for usable light output, even light spread, stable cooling and correct operation at both brightness levels.

Many standard U.S. 1156 incandescent bulbs are rated at about 27 watts. Standard 1157 bulbs commonly use about 27 watts for the brighter function and 8 watts for the lower function. Related international versions may be rated at 21W or 21/5W. LED replacements can use less power.

Some vehicles do. If an LED turn signal flashes too quickly, it may need a built-in resistor, an external load resistor or an LED-compatible flasher relay. A CANBus decoder may help with flickering or dashboard warnings, but it may not correct every hyperflash issue.

1156 and 1157 bulbs are used in selected cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles and other vehicles. Fitment varies by model year, trim and light position. Check the original bulb number or use the vehicle fitment tool instead of choosing by vehicle model alone.
